The tenth largest city in the country, San Jose became California's first civilian settlement in 1777 with a population of 66. Since then, San Jose's population has increased to nearly a million and has become a world renowned center for arts, culture, and technology.

Arts
From musical theater to opera, alternative galleries to museums, Broadway to burlesque, San Jose boasts a rich arts scene. The first Friday of every month, Downtown San Jose hosts an evening of arts and culture during which the talents of local artists, vendors, and street performers are showcased.

Culture
More than 52 different languages are spoken in San Jose, a city known for its colorful mosaic of diverse cultures. The City is proud of its cultural heritage, which is reflected in its vibrant cultural neighborhoods, ethnic chambers of commerce, and many cultural festivals.
