Hearing Loss in the Community: Prevention Efforts at San Jose State
Developed by the Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), San Jose State's Hearing Conservation Program is designed to prevent hearing loss in university workers who are exposed to significant occupational noise. The program incorporates annual audiograms, noise training, noise monitoring, and the use of hearing protectors. San Jose State campus employees are encouraged to access hearing conservation training modules through ClarityNet, online safety training software developed for businesses, schools, and law enforcement agencies.
Dangers of Occupational Noise Exposure
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), hearing loss is one of the most common occupational injuries in the United States. Each year, millions of workers are exposed to occupational noise that places them at risk of noise-related hearing loss. A worker's risk depends on the noise levels to which he or she is exposed during an eight-hour work day. At 90 decibels, 25 percent of workers will become hearing impaired. At 85 decibels, the risk drops to 8 percent.
